From Jennifer Kyrnin, your Guide to Web Design / HTML
I hope everyone had a safe and happy new year celebration. But now that it is 2011, we freelancers have to come back to the reality of business - taxes. In the United States, most freelancers pay taxes quarterly and the due date for Q4 is fast approaching. Do you know when your taxes are due? Plus, the annual About.com Readers' Choice Awards start in a short time. While you can't submit nominations yet, you can be thinking about sites, products and companies you think deserve to be finalists. Plus, this year there are even more sites participating. Finally, I take a look at external style sheets versus inline style sheets and see how they stack up when trying to improve the speed of your site's downloads.

There are lots of different software applications that web designers can use to improve their sites. Every Sunday I highlight a free or inexpensive software application beyond HTML editors that is good for web designers. But I'd also like to know about the tools you find valuable. Here is one that I received that looks interesting:

Quarterly Taxes are Nearly Due
January 18, 2011 is fast approaching, and have you prepared your quarterly taxes for fourth quarter 2010? If you are a freelance web designer in the United States, you may need to file quarterly estimated taxes to avoid paying a penalty. But if you don't know the dates they are due, you might be penalized anyway. Make sure you know the due dates for 2010 and 2011 taxes.

Get Ready for the Readers' Choice Awards
About.com Readers' Choice Awards 2011 It's time to start thinking about the sites, software, and hosting that you think was the best in 2010. The About.com Readers' Choice Awards give you the chance to nominate and vote for the best of the best in tons of different categories. The awards have expanded this year to cover more than just computing and technology topics. You will be able to nominate your favorites in entertainment, style, home and garden, sports, hobbies, and more. Nominations will start January 13, 2011. But start thinking now about what sites, products, etc. that you think deserve to be nominated. And if you visit other About.com sites, you should ask the Guides if they are participating in the Readers' Choice Awards.

External Style Sheets are Faster Than Embedded and Inline St
If you've read some of my speed tips, you know that you should put your CSS in external style sheets because those help your whole site load more quickly. But some people will then load two or more external style sheets, and this can negte the speed gains from using an external style sheet because of the extra HTTP requests. Learn why you should only use one external style sheet.

Poll: Have you ever had a problem with a domain name?
Domain names are important to websites because they make it easier to get to the site and people feel that companies without their own domain name are not as reliable as those with their own domain. But getting and keeping a domain can be very difficult. I heard a story a few weeks ago about someone who had trouble renewing their domain and inadvertently lost it. Then their domain registrar (who shall remain nameless) said they could re-register it if they paid them a $50 bounty on the domain (in addition to the domain fees). Unfortunately, this type of hijacking is much more prevalent than it should be. Have you ever had a problem with getting or keeping a domain name? Vote Now View Results
