From Jennifer Kyrnin, your Guide to Web Design / HTML
The About.com Readers' Choice Awards closes today, March 8th, at 11:59pm EST. If you haven't voted for your favorite web design sites and tools now is the time! And don't forget to check out the other About.com awards sites at http://awards.about.com/

In this week's newsletter I cover using long-tail keywords for SEO, converting PDFs to HTML, and starting out designing a website.

There are lots of different software applications that web designers can use to improve their sites. Every Sunday I highlight a free or inexpensive software application beyond HTML editors that is good for web designers. But I'd also like to know about the tools you find valuable. Here is one that I received that looks interesting:

Using long tail keywords is similar to using other keywords
The key is figuring out which section of the tail you want to focus on and then finding the keywords. Choosing a keyword phrase for any given page is an important step to create a well-optimized page. And by finding long-tail keywords to focus on you can develop a site with content that gets viewed by readers (even if not the millions available to top-tier terms).

Convert PDF files to HTML
A few weeks ago, I gave you a list of some good HTML to PDF converters. And I was asked if I knew of any converters that would go the other way - PDF to HTML. So, today I present you with a list of 5 good converters. Not all of them are free, but I have tried all of them and (in most cases) they work just fine. If you know of other PDF to HTML or HTML to PDF converters I would love to hear about them.

Get Started Designing Your Own Website
One of the things I like best about web design is how long it takes. This may seem strange, because I, like most people, am all about instant gratification. But when I start designing a new website, I often spend days, weeks, and sometimes months just thinking about what I'm going to build. Even when I'm working on a client's website design, I spend a lot more time planning than I do building. If you take the time to plan your website design, you can create a site that is impressive and makes you proud. And if you're still struggling to learn HTML you can learn while you plan. Because designing a website is more than just HTML and CSS.

Poll: Should designers know how to code?
There are so many high quality WYSIWYG editors out there that many beginning web designers don't see any need to learn the back end languages of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, or PHP. But is that wise? Do you think it's important for designers to know how to write HTML? What languages should designers learn? Vote Now View Results
